Cryptids of Maine is a series of original art prints and postcards illustrated by me celebrating the state’s most fascinating folklore. The back of each piece tells the story of each cryptid researched and written by me – allowing the legends to live on.
The mysterious Merman of Casco Bay was cataloged in John Josselyn’s 1674 book, “An Account of Two Voyages to New England.” A colonist named Mr. Mitton encountered “a triton” while boating in Casco Bay. Legends portray the mighty triton deity as a large merman carrying a conch shell. Startled as the
mer-creature laid a hand upon the side of his canoe, Mitton chopped it off with a hatchet. The sullen triton summarily sank, dyeing the murky water with his purple blood.
